Another Phony Objection
In November, Illinois voters will be asked if they want to hold a constitutional convention in 2010. The convention would give delegates an opportunity to change the state’s constitution, which was adopted in 1970.
On Monday, a number of high profile special interest groups announced they were banding together to spend an estimated $3 million to lobby voters to vote ”no” on the question. Kevin Semlow, a lobbyist for the Illinois Farm Bureau, offered up one reason for his organization’s involvement in the anti-convention movement.
”Scheduling a convention for 2010 would freeze any movement on pressing issues that need to be addressed,” he said.
Hello? Movement in Springfield has been in a polar deep freeze for a year. Feuding among Democrats who control the show has created a logjam when it comes to the ”pressing issues” facing the state.
Ask yourself this question: is Springfield taking on the issues you care about? Will they?
